Walking Rivers: on May 17 a circular route to approach the Ebro River between Alcalá de Ebro – Remolinos (Zaragoza)

25 April, 2025

The LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 project joins for the second consecutive year to the international initiative Walking Rivers, organizing for next May 17, 2025 a circular route on foot and by inflatable boat that, mainly, will cross the municipality of Alcalá de Ebro, but will also reach Remolinos .

The tour starts(at 9:30 a.m.) and ends(around 1:00 p.m.) at the same point, Las Piscinas bar in the town of Alcalá de Ebro. It includes sections for the walk and a section in an inflatable boat that will allow to cross both margins of the river (previous experience is not necessary).

The activity, designed for the enjoyment of the river environment, will offer participants the opportunity to get closer to the river, its environmental values and its variable reality.

It will also explain the intervention philosophy of the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project, which seeks to adapt to floods through nature-based measures, and will show some of the actions currently being carried out within the framework of the Ebro Resilience Strategy in the area.

Explanatory stops will be made and local history related to flooding will be shared. From the Ínsula Barataria, to milestones of interventions that have already reduced flood pressure in the area, to examples of bioengineering.

How to participate?

  • It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and appropriate footwear, a cap, water and walking sticks if you need them. 👩‍🦯
  • No knowledge is required for the boat section. 🛶
  • Wear something blue (t-shirt, cap, etc) to join the Walking Rivers movement! 🔵

Walking Rivers and the Ebro Resilience 2024 route

Walking Rivers is a worldwide movement that celebrates the importance of rivers as sources of life and connection.

Through the organization of simultaneous walks along different riverbeds around the planet, this initiative seeks to raise awareness of the value of river ecosystems and promote their care. In its 2024 edition, Walking Rivers was attended by more than 2,000 people on five continents.

On that occasion, the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 project joined with a 7 km route between the meanders of El Señorío (Castejón, Navarra) and La Roza (Alfaro, La Rioja).

On that day, topics such as the flood phenomenon and the actions implemented and proposed by the Project to reduce the risk in the middle stretch, including the recovery of river space and river restoration, were discussed.

The route was included in Zone 1 of intervention of the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 project, where actions such as the reconnection of meanders, the creation of relief channels, the recovery of old river branches and the enlargement of the river space are being carried out.

For the 2025 edition, the motto remains the same: to show the world that rivers are valuable and deserve to be protected.

Ebro Resilience Strategy: Tranche 7

In addition to the technical team of the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project, the Aragonese Water Institute and the Government of Aragon, partners of the Project and responsible for the intervention being carried out to reduce the risk of flooding in the Alcalá de Ebro – Remolinos – Luceni section, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (NextGeneration) in the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and within the Ebro Resilience Strategy, have participated especially in the organization of this event.

The actions here are focused on a stretch of about 11 km of the Ebro, between the areas of El Camponuevo and Los Morerales, covering the municipalities of Luceni, Tauste, Pedrola, Remolinos and Alcalá de Ebro.

The works include the elimination of several existing defenses on the left bank of Remolinos, Alcalá de Ebro and Luceni, the construction of two safety dikes in Alcalá de Ebro and a ditch-dike in Remolinos, as well as the adaptation of a road as a defense and measures to restore the riparian vegetation.

In these areas, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro, also a partner of LIFE Ebro Resilience P1, has previously carried out interventions for flood adaptation that have already shown their effectiveness (creation of a relief channel, application of bioengineering techniques).
