Signage in the meander of La Roza: disseminating the interventions in the area

20 January, 2025
Cartelería de La Roza, explicación sobre el terreno.

Nuevo cartel instalado en La Roza, explicación a visitantes.

The first informative panel (download it here) on the interventions that LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 has carried out for its recovery as a fluvial space and to add it to the strategy for the reduction of flooding affections has arrived at the meander of La Roza, in Alfaro, La Rioja.

This panel is another way to explain, inform and offer knowledge to the territory. Passers-by, cyclists… will be able to put in context this space and the interventions that have already been concluded in this space, integrated in the zone 1 of the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1: natural measures of water retention, recovering space for the river.

It becomes a tool for the transmission of knowledge on the application of nature-based measures and for the presentation of technical arguments for the removal and relocation of the existing defensive dyke.

Cartelería La Rioza,

This poster will be used to publicize the event:

  1. Why the intervention, what were the problems?
  • The defensive dike (mota, mazón) in different phases between 1980 and 1987, which sought to protect the cultivation area , generated the channeling of the river.
  • Thus, it forced the water to go around the entire meander, facing the passage under the railroad bridge from an inefficient angle.
  • The dam obstructed 10 of the bridge’s 15 spans
  • The riverbed collapsed in the narrowest part of the channel through the levee
  • The right bank of the river has lost its function as an ecological corridor.
  • The section of the river was morphologically and environmentally degraded.
  1. Typologies of intervention applied
  • Recovery of river space (22 hectares) with the elimination of the dike and the construction of a shorter and more distant one (set back) from the river.
  • Creation of a relief channel to permeabilize the meander in small floods
  • Creation of a wetland
  • Environmental restoration of the meander with the planting of 5,500 specimens of riparian species.
