Reducing future maintenance of interventions: La Roza meander relief channel

5 July, 2024

Adaptation, sustainability, terms that sometimes come with the details.

In the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project we seek to reduce the future maintenance of the interventions carried out during the recovery of the river space in La Roza, Alfaro, La Rioja.

A example is the plantings defined in the relief channel excavated in the meander: next winter a herbaceous cover crop, alfalfa, will be planted to prevent tree growth and maintain a water path.

On the other hand, in the rest of the meander, the renaturalization of the soto type is encouraged.

Future uses of the meander

In addition, in the future it is planned to introduce a grazing use of sheep, goats or horses to help maintain this relief channel by consolidating the pasture that favors the flow of water during floods.

This idea has been collected during the social participation process regarding the future compatible uses of the meander recovered as a river space.

And what is a relief channel?
The relief channel temporarily brings forward, with a low-impact intervention, the flooding of a meander, allowing water to enter it with less flow in circulation:
  • Increases the width of the river when needed (in floods), reducing the height of the flowing water.
  • Allows water to be directed to areas of interest, to reduce pressure on the defenses of urban centers or to promote the functionality of bridges.
  • Increases the number of days of flooding of the meander, favoring the development of riverine habitats
