On February 27 and 28 we held the course “Educating and enjoying in flood-prone areas: knowledge and resources for active tourism guides and environmental educators“, a course aimed at environmental educators focused on adaptation to flood risk in the Ebro basin.
The activity was free of charge and filled all available places, bringing together working professionals from La Rioja, Navarra and Zaragoza, as well as participants from other parts of Spain and students who are training to work in environmental education.
A space for learning, exchange and updating
Throughout the sessions, spaces for the exchange of experiences were generated, where participants shared projects and methodologies that they apply in the projects in which they work, as well as moments for the analysis of how environmental education is key in strengthening social capacities.
On the part of the LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project, the program included thematic talks that addressed the dynamics of rivers and flooding processes; the historical evolution of the vision on flood risk management; communication in flood risk management.
And of course, Ebro Resilience educational materials were presented and made available for children, general public and specific sectors.
These activities made it possible to update knowledge, discuss approaches and reinforce the importance of environmental education as a tool to improve the resilience of the territories.
Interpretative route through La Roza meander
On Saturday morning, the participants took part in an interpretative route through the meander of La Roza, in Alfaro (La Rioja), a recovered river space that exemplifies the importance of returning space to the river to reduce risks and improve ecosystems. The visit made it possible to observe on the ground real adaptation actions and their educational potential.
The course concluded with a participatory dynamic in which the educators elaborated proposals to strengthen environmental education and the work of tourist guides in areas where flood risk adaptation measures are being developed. The contributions collected will serve as a basis for future training activities and support materials.
