River restoration projects approved for sections 7 Alcalá de Ebro, Remolinos and Luceni and 9 Torres de Berrellén and Sobradiel.
The Official Gazette of Aragon has announced the approval of the projects of “River restoration and habitat improvement in sections 7 Alcalá de Ebro, Remolinos y Luceni y 9 Torres de Berrellén and Sobradielas part of the Ebro Resilience Strategy.
The process continues after the round of meetings open to the public organized last April by the Government of Aragon, through the Aragonese Water Institute. Aragonese Water Institute (IAA) to present both projects in the town councils of Torres de Berrellén, Sobradiel, Remolinos and Alcalá de Ebro.
In section 7 Alcalá de Ebro-Remolinos-Luceni, with a budget of 1.8 million euros, three existing defenses will be removed, safety perimeters will be improved and measures will be implemented to improve riverbank vegetation in an 11-kilometer section.
On the other hand, in section 9 Torres de Berrellén-Sobradiel, with a budget of 2.8 million euros, defenses will be removed in two sections of the right bank of the Ebro, a ditch will be buried and the safety perimeters in urban areas will be improved, in addition to improvements in the riverside vegetation.
The Ebro Resilience Strategy seeks to be a framework for collaboration between different administrations and other stakeholders to manage flood risk in the middle stretch of the Ebro River in a supportive and coordinated manner. This strategy includes the study of 260 kilometers of the river, divided into sections, in order to evaluate the protection of urban areas against floods with a return period of 25 years or less, and to analyze possible damage in non-urban areas for floods with a return period of 10 years.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challengethe Hydrographic Confederation of the Ebro and the Autonomous Communities of Aragón, La Rioja y Navarra participate in this strategy and collaborate in the implementation of the selected measures.
The approved projects seek not only to restore and protect the river environment, but also to foster the resilience and sustainability of riparian communities.
