The LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project has attended a new scientific-technical event to present itself as a case study, on this occasion the Congress of Landscape Bioengineering, from 22 to 24 October in the Vall de Núria (Girona).

Specifically, the presentation “LIFE Ebro Resilience P1: flood risk management through green infrastructures and adaptation measures” was included in the water bioengineering block, given by the administrative coordinator of the Project, Eduardo Murillo, from the public company TRAGSATEC.

The project is committed to the recovery of river space and nature-based solutions for the adaptation of the middle stretch of the Ebro to flooding. This project appears in the catalog of Nature-Based Solutions for climate change adaptation in Spain as a success story.

Among the Ebro Resilience intervention typologies is the recovery of river space to reduce the impact of floods; the reconnection of channels, meanders or secondary branches, the creation of relief channels, the creation of temporary flood areas…

Bioengineering is present in actions such as the creation of krainer walls, used for erosion control and stabilization of river banks. This technique makes it possible to replace traditional rigid elements – such as concrete or stone walls, which often damage river dynamics and can affect the biodiversity of river ecosystems – with technologies based on the use of natural and biodegradable materials.

The LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 Project (LIFE20 ENV/ES/00327), approved by the European Commission in the LIFE 2020 call, covers three autonomous communities (La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón), has a duration of 6 years and a total budget of 13,310,350 €, with 55% European funding.

Its partners are the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), through its companies TRAGSA and TRAGSATEC; the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation; the Government of La Rioja; the Government of Navarre, through Orekan – Environmental Management of Navarre; the Government of Aragon and the Aragonese Water Institute.

Congress

The XI AEIP-EFIB Congress on Landscape Bioengineering is a scientific and technical event that promotes the study and application of nature-based solutions for landscape restoration and management.

Organized by the Spanish Association of Landscape Engineering (AEIP) and the European Federation for Landscape Architecture (EFIB), the congress is open to professionals, researchers and students interested in bioengineering as a tool to address current environmental and territorial challenges.

In addition to the block in which LIFE Ebro Resilience P1 has participated on water bioengineering, the Congress also includes presentations on soil bioengineering and on urban planning and environment.
