Informative Seminar on Flow Forecasting and reservoir management in Ebro floods

Within the Ebro Resilience Strategy, several dissemination actions are developed with the aim of promoting knowledge about flood episodes in the middle stretch of the Ebro and to increase society's self-protection tools in the event of floods. This was also the aim of the Informative Conference "Flow forecasting and reservoir management in the Ebro floods". In the following video, José Adolfo Álvarez, head of the Basin Processes Center of the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation, explains basic concepts such as the causes of floods or why it is necessary to have a hydrological prediction. In addition, he introduces some tools with which it is possible to generate forecasts or that allow access to information generated by the basin organization, offering the main keys for its correct interpretation.

Informative Conference on Magnitude and frequency of floods in the Ebro river

The Ebro Resilience Strategy organizes the event "Magnitude and frequency of Ebro floods: estimation, measurement and updating of flows in its middle reach", with the aim of increasing society's knowledge of Ebro floods. In this video the head of Hydrology and River Basins of the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation, María Luisa Moreno, explains the different methods of measurement, the relationship between height and flow and the revisions of the reference flows that are made after each flood episode. In this way, it has become clear that it is not only important to take into account the maximum flow of the flood, but we must also look at other aspects such as the duration and total volume of water flowing, in addition to the state of soil moisture and various other factors.

Lateral Flow Buffer Zones

Lateral flow buffer zones are a novel proposal consisting of a succession of areas of controlled temporary flooding located on arable land adjacent to the river channel. This measure adapts the cultivated areas to the passage of floods, allowing the overflowing water to flow over the farms, reducing the damage they may suffer.

Construction of a Krainer Wall in "El Estajao" in Alfaro (La Rioja).

The Krainer Wall or green wall is a bioengineering technique used for erosion control and stabilization of the banks. The one projected in the "El Estajao" area is located at the junction of the new dike with the current Alfaro defense, it will be 100 meters long, 5 meters wide and 1600 m3 of breakwater.

Ebro Resilience interpretative descent

The Ebro Resilience Strategy has organized a series of interpretative descents along the Ebro riverbed with the aim of discussing flood risk management and the principles of the Ebro Resilience Strategy with members of the press.

Flood forecasting and reservoir management

The Automatic Hydrological Information System of the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation, the SAIHEbro, is 25 years old, and on this occasion we take the opportunity to explain the relationship between weather forecasts and flow prediction, the importance of these forecasts for the preparation of warnings to the population and for the assumption of preventive measures in areas where there are reservoirs.

Vegetation treatment as a flood risk management measure

In this new video we explain what options are available to Administrations and individuals to carry out vegetation treatments in rivers. We explain who can intervene, what procedures have to be carried out before the River Basin Organization (Hydrographic Confederations) and what limitations exist.

What are the Hydrographic Confederations?

In this video we explain the keys of these organizations that are crucial for water management since they were born in 1926 (the first one in the Ebro basin, on March 5 of that year). Their competences, their organization and their principles: to know them is to know water management in Spain.

Get to know the Ebro groves

The copses are an ideal habitat for a large number of animal and plant species and ensure the stability of the banks. In the middle stretch of the Ebro there are 7 protected areas belonging to the Natura 2000 Network linked to the river environment, 63% of its length being integrated within it. There are 16 habitats of community interest in these areas.
